Image: CNET I recently decided that it was time to retire my good old Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000. After all, I have been using that keyboard since 2005. While there is nothing wrong with my trusty old keyboard, I just figured it was time for a change.

For now, let's examine the Windows function keys that make this keyboard a real extension of Windows 10. SEE: Windows function keys Whereas the Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 and the Natural Multimedia Keyboard before it provided a separate row of multimedia and specialty buttons across the top of the keyboard, the Sculpt Ergonomic doubles up the function keys, just like a lot of laptop keyboards.

Even though Microsoft introduced the Natural Multimedia Keyboard, it really didn't offer any new features, so I continued to use Natural Keyboard Pro and the Natural Keyboard Elite until 2005, when I purchased the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000, shown in Figure D. This version came only in black and featured a leatherette wrist rest. The multimedia buttons along the top were more streamlined and other nice features were added, such as the Zoom control in the center and the Back and Forward buttons between the wrist rest panels.

The keys work well and the ergonomic shape makes it very easy and (for lack of a better word) natural. It has a lot of extra buttons on it, but I don't use them. Unfortunately, the two I have now are my third and forth ones. The first one was for work. You would have to push the space bar with two fingers or it would misalign and not go down like it should.

The dimensions of the 4000 are 19.8'W x 10.3'D and the dimensions of the Sculpt Ergonomic are 15.4'W x 8.96'D. The keyboard is not only smaller, but it is much slimmer than previous versions—yet Microsoft reorganized the layout of this keyboard to include all the familiar standard keys plus a few of the more useful extras. Of course Microsoft designed this keyboard with its initiative in mind. In its literature, it describes the Sculpt Ergonomic as follows: 'With advances like the split keyboard—which includes a padded palm rest, palm lift, curved key bed, and a natural arc design—Microsoft offers products that work seamlessly with your body's natural posture and functions.' I'll talk about the mouse and keypad in a moment.

All in all, I would, and have, recommend this keyboard to anyone looking for a more comfortable way to type.and am thinking about investing in one for my work computer at my own expense, so I can bwe comfortable there, too. The key configuration is significantly different, but the more significant problem is that the printing has worn off many of the keys: E, R, S, D, C, O, L, and M are essentially mystery keys. I'm a touch typist, but I still find this unacceptable. I must use a USB keyboard because my current computer has no PS/2 ports, but this keyboard is despicable.

I'm wondering about the touch of the Wireless ergonomic 7000 keyboard. Taj mahal musician. I have the ergonomic 4000 keyboard and hate the touch. I have to press the keys down too far and it is noisy. I used to use the white ergonomic keyboard with no problem but the keys started sticking after six years! The 7000 is described as 'soft touch.'

I have disassembled my first one, and it is very easy to clean. The only downside is that the spacebar is bit stiff to touch, and is very noisy, but I can tolerate it so I am giving it a full set of stars. (Apologies to my coworkers.). I had owned one of the first generation Microsoft ergonomic boards, and once I got broken in to the different way it felt, really liked it. The new generation boards are even better. Lots of handy keys, usable either as F keys or as specific task keys, very easy to use.
